HEROFOL DENSO: TRIAL ON GREENHOUSE CUCUMBER

Cucumber is a plant that needs a good nutrition throughout its growth in order to obtain high quality fruits (growth, uniformity, etc.) and a good final performance, therefore a balanced NPK nutrition is very important.

In Herogra Especiales we care about farmers, so they can get a good development and high production in their crops. Therefore, in this trial we have used products from the Herofol Denso Range, nutritional products in gel format that have different NPK balances so they can be used at any stage of the crop and that also incorporate the XR47 activator, which is the only activator on the market capable of enhancing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

To evaluate the effect of these products from the Herofol Denso Range (Herofol Denso Verde + Herofol Denso Fosfatado + Herofol Denso Rojo) in crop development and production in a cucumber greenhouse compared to a control area with full nutritional requirements.

The trial was carried out on Dutch cucumbers, at the Tecnova Technology Center in the province of Almería.

The agronomic data of the trial are shown below.

  • Crop: cucumber.
  • Variety: Dutch cucumber.
  • Location: Tecnova Technology Center (Almería).
  • Crop system: greenhouse.
  • Application system: irrigation.
  • Control area: full nutritional fertilization.
  • Treated area: full nutritional fertilization + Herofol Denso Range.
  • Start of the crop: April 2020.
  • End of the crop: June 2020.

The trial was carried out in a greenhouse, in which it was distributed in three replications, and the applications were made on a weekly basis by irrigation. The timing of the applications and the products applied can be seen in the application calendar (Table 1).

Figure 2 shows the greenhouse in the first days after transplanting.

The recommendation of product applications was influenced by the growth and development of the crop, therefore, weekly visual inspections were made prior to product application.

Within each area of the trial (control and Herofol Denso Range), the following parameters were measured throughout the trial:

  • Crop growth.
  • Performance evolution of the commercial crop.
  • Evolution of the number of commercial fruits.

Crop height was measured on five occasions during the vegetative growth phase of the crop, on a weekly basis.

Graph 1 shows the evolution of the height of the cucumber crop.

Graph 1 shows that 49 days after transplanting, the height of the plants treated with the Herofol Denso Range was a 9 % higher than the ones in the control area.

The evolution of the commercial performance consists in measuring the cumulative production obtained during the course of the trial. Figure 2 shows the greenhouse in production.

Graph 2 shows how during the first days of harvesting the values were similar, but as the products of the Herofol Denso Range were being applied during the week, these kilograms begun to increase and differentiate with regards to the control, reaching 21 % more production at the end of the campaign with the application of the products of the Herofol Denso Range with respect to the control.

The evolution of the number of commercial fruits consists in quantifying the number of fruits harvested per square meter (Graph 3).

As in Graph 2, Graph 3 shows how during the first days of harvesting the values were similar between each treatment, but as the products of the Herofol Denso Range were being applied during the week, these kilograms begun to increase and differentiate with regards to the control, this, at the end of the crop, translates into an increase of 14 % more fruits in the area treated with the Herofol Denso Range with respect to the control. In addition, as cucumber plants generally occupy 1 m2, it can also be stated that a 14 % of fruits per plant were obtained.

With the application of the Herofol Denso Range we can achieve:

  • Increase of the crop height by 9 % at 49 days compared to the control area.
  • Increase of the commercial performance of the cucumber crop by 21 % with respect to the control area.
  • Increase of the number of commercial fruits of the cucumber crop by 14 % with respect to the control.
