What is organic farming? How does it differ from conventional farming?
Organic farming is a farming system that seeks to obtain food of the highest quality, respecting the environment and soil fertility, through the use of natural and sustainable resources. This type of farming uses biological and mechanical cultivation methods, avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals.
In organic farming, the use of fertilizers, which cannot be artificial, is limited, and phytosanitary products are controlled, using organic sources or biological control with insects. In addition, the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and mineral nitrogen fertilizers is prohibited.
Benefits of organic farming:
- Respect for the environment.
- Soil quality improvement, enhancing its structure, fertility and the presence of beneficial microorganisms.
- Support for biodiversity.
- Promotion of a healthy diet.
Organic farming area in Spain and future prospects.
In 2022, Spain had more than 2,600,000 hectares under organic cultivation, an increase of 9.7% compared to 2021 and of 35% compared to 2015. This growth reflects a growing consumer interest in organic food, and it is expected to continue to increase in the coming years.
This has to be taken into account, as the European Green Deal of the European Commission has the aim of making 25% of the EU farming area organic by 2030, which is a significant challenge.

Organic solutions from Herogra
- Totem is a powerful root biostimulant based on the microorganism Bacillus velezensis HE05+ and ferments, which improves crop yield and quality. This is achieved by improving soil conditions, promoting the interaction and development of beneficial microbiota and increasing the availability of nutrients for the crop. At plant level, it enhances rooting, optimizes the balance between the aerial and root parts, brings the harvest forward and delays senescence.
- Ecotop is a new generation product, specially designed to enhance fruit setting and fruit quality. It includes the exclusive ST14 enhancer, which optimizes the natural synthesis of auxins, as well as Ascophyllum nodosum algae extract with mannitol, which is a high quality osmoregulator that biostimulates and improves tolerance to stress during the fruit setting phase.
- Herophos K is a unique product on the market, based on 100% natural organic phosphorus and calcium. Its fast absorbing potassium content makes it the perfect ally to increase your crop yield. It also offers a strong anti-stress effect thanks to its betaines and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content. It is especially recommended to boost the flowering phase and enhance fruit quality.

Yield comparison: Conventional vs. organic farming
With Herogra products, it is possible to achieve full nutrition for organic greenhouse tomatoes, comparable to that of conventionally-grown tomatoes. The following graph shows the results of a trial conducted by a research center. In this trial, tomato production using conventional nutrition with non-organic products was compared to organic nutrition with Herogra products.
