Importance of seed treatment for the best crop development

Seed treatment is an essential process in crop planning, comparable to the importance of building a house on a strong foundation. By intervening directly on the seed, significant benefits are obtained since the start of cultivation. This practice should be considered fundamental, as it improves both the viability of germination and the adaptability of the crop, which are crucial in agricultural environments where planting conditions are unpredictable and  abiotic stress, such as drought or low temperatures, are increasingly common.

Among the main advantages of seed treatment is the  significant improvement in germination rate, ensuring that more seeds develop into vigorous plants. This is essential for a uniform and thick crop, which optimizes competition for light and nutrients, and ultimately increases the final yield of the crop.

In addition, seed treatment acts as an initial defence in the early stages of growth, when plants are most vulnerable. This early protection not only encourages a more robust development, but also prepares the crop to cope with adverse conditions such as water or heat stress, contributing to its long-term resilience and success.

Now that we know the advantages and reasons for treating seeds, let’s look at the most common methods and how complex their application can be:

  1. Powder treatment: It protects seeds against fungi and pests, improving safety during germination and early stages of development.
  2. Liquid coating: It provides uniform coating and allows the addition of biostimulants that enhance plant vigor from its initial growth.
  3. Film coating: It preserves seed size with a thin layer of polymers that may include nutrients or protective agents.
  4. Encapsulated: It provides thicker, more nutritious protection, perfect for small seeds that require more shelter during sowing.
  5. Physical agents: It uses heat or radiation to kill pathogens, making it a suitable alternative to chemical treatments.

At Herogra Especiales, our commitment to farmers drives us to constantly seek solutions to improve the profitability and quality of crops. Therefore, one of our main areas of development is to guarantee the germination viability, a key step in achieving maximum agronomic efficiency.

TOTEM, our last generation biostimulant, uses Orygin 2.0 technology. It is based on an exclusive fermentation process of the microorganism Bacillus velezensis HE05, which develops unique metabolites with high activity in the plant. Applied through liquid coating, TOTEM increases germination viability and enhances rooting, counteracting the negative effects of fungicides.

TOTEM offers a double effect, both on the soil and on the plant:

On the soil

  • It promotes the development of beneficial microbiota, creating a favourable environment for the roots.
  • It improves nutrient availability thanks to the PGPR (Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria) activity of the bacteria present.

On the plant

  • It stimulates rooting naturally, regenerating the root system and promoting the formation of secondary hairs that maximize the uptake of nutrients and water.
  • It ensures balanced growth, optimizing root development with regard to the aerial part.
  • It accelerates the start of harvest and increases the crop yield, thanks to its biostimulant effect and improved nutrient absorption.
  • It extends the life cycle of the crop by reducing the levels of ethylene, a hormone that accelerates premature ageing.

Treating seeds with TOTEM is a strategic investment with a significant impact on crop yield, safety and success. Given the growing food demand, seed treatment is a key tool for optimizing the early stages of cultivation. You will be able to enjoy its many benefits as soon as possible by incorporating it into your regular practices.
